14 COMMON CONJUNCTION TO WRITE COMPLEX / COMPOUND SENTENCES

  1. BECAUSE
    Use: To show reason
    Example: We always eat at home because I like cooking
  2. ALTHOUGH
    Use: To show two opposite statements
    Example: Although he had a tough life, he was still very positive.
  3. WHEREAS
    Use: To show contrast
    Example: The wife is very funny whereas the husband is boring.
  4. BUT
    Use: To join two ideas that are opposites
    Example: She works very hard but she is not very lucky.
  5. BESIDES
    Use: It is a preposition. It means in addition to, also
    Example: She is very good at math besides English.
  6. UNLIKE
    Use: Means different from, not similar to
    Example: She is utterly unlike her older sister
  7. THEREFORE
    Use: To show the result/ effect of an action
    Example: We booked return flight tickets early. Therefore, we got cheap ones.
  8. PROVIDED
    Use: Means if or only if
    Example: We can buy that car provided we have enough money.
  9. UNLESS
    Use: Means if … not
    Example: Your grades will not improve unless you work harder.
  10. SINCE
    Use: To show result (= as, because)
    Example: Since we have got a few minutes to wait for the train, let’s have a cup of coffee.
  11. SO
    Use: To show result
    Example: She got up late this morning, so she missed the train to the town.
  12. IF
    Use: To show condition
    Example: If you heat water at 100 °C, it boils and evaporates a lot.
  13. YET
    Use: To show contrast or joins opposites
    Example: I was not doing well in my Math course, yet overall I had a 6.5 average.
  14. AFTER
    Use: to tell us about order, sequence
    Example: She left home after she had finished all the housework.
